For sure, many people blogging online use Blogger Platform by Google as it provides you with most of the features for free. You must add a custom domain to Blogspot blog when you have your custom domain in your hand. Domain represents your blog so, adding it on your blog should be done with search engine optimization measures.

You can set your custom domain easily but definitely, different registrars have different internal facility environment to set domain name settings or mostly called DNS Settings. I have explained generally for mostly all registrars except a few - I'll upload for each major registrar separately, soon! - but, you'll find this really helpful for mostly all registrars.

Below are the steps to Add Custom Domain on Blogger with Godaddy.

  1. Open your GoDaddy account >> Domains >> Select your domain of which you want to change records >> Click 'Manage' in front of it.
  2. Change the Name Servers (Your nameservers determine where your domain points based on whether you are parking, forwarding, or hosting your domain with godaddy or with another registrar) to default ones. If they are already on default nameservers addresses then, go ahead. >> Save Changes.
  3. Refresh the page >> Check if the nameservers have been updated or not yet. Once they are updated click DNS Setting or Edit DNS Setting for that domain.
  4. Click Add Record >> Select CNAME >> In the Host field add: www >> In the Point To or Destination field add: ghs.google.com. >> Keep the TLD to 1 hour or 1/2 >> Save.
  5. Open your Blogger Account >>  Select your blog on which you want to add custom domain >> Click Settings >> Click on "Add third party url to blog" >> type your domain name with www. No need to add http:// or https://. >> Click Save!
  6. You should get an error on saving! You'll get 2 records on that error. One is with www which points to ghs.google.com while another record is unique for your Google Account or Blogger Account. So, Copy that (the one which you haven't added yet) Label or Host field content e-g: xxxXXXxxx etc. from the error.
  7. Go back to Registrar Account >> DNS Settings >> Add Record >> Record Type: CNAME >> Paste the copied Label / Host field content in Host Field.
  8. From Blogger Error you got in second last step copy the destination of the label you copied before. >> Paste that destination address or Points To URL to the Godaddy Registrar in the Points To Field for the CNAME you are about to add. >> Keep TLD to 1 hour >> Click Finish / Save / Ok.
  9. Back to Blogger Error >> Keep everything as it but just click Save again! >> Your blogger custom domain should be saved at this point. >> After saving click again Edit URL >> Tick / Mark the check box saying "Redirect non-www to www URL" and save again! >> That is all! Cheers!

Good To Know

  • Depending upon the registrar, it may take time for the servers to point to new destination. So, wait for sometime or at least for the given TLD.
  • Once you are done with everything, check your site for non-www link. Site should redirect non-www to www url automatically. If it is not working then, follow the tutorial Solved Blogger Non-www to www Redirect Not Working Issue.
